Mr. Sands, the father of Linda’s children, has taken the children from the clutches of Dr. Flint.  Dr. Flint wouldn’t take any offer for Linda’s children while there was still a chance of using them as bait.  But soon, inevitably, his finances started to dip again, and a speculator came to the door asking to buy slaves.  Little did Dr. Flint know that the speculator had already made an offer to give Linda’s children to Mr. Sands, without any extra fees.  The children were placed in the coffle with the other slaves to be sold, then taken to Mr. Sands, where they were told they had escaped Dr. Flint.  However, they were not freed by him, and that is what Linda talks to him about in the storeroom.  He promises to free them, and she trusts him because of his parental status to the children (in theory, but definitely not by law) and the efforts he has shown to buy them from Dr. Flint.  However, I don’t trust him, because he is a man of his times.  Sure, he was kind to Linda during their affair and helped take his progeny from Dr. Flint, but he has years and years of living in the antebellum South to overcome.  Besides, he may be wrapped up in his plans for the election and in any legitimate family he has gathered around him, to take notice of the offspring he made with Linda.
