The North for Linda is a mixed blessing.  She is, for all intents and purposes, free from the machinations of Dr. Flint and other slaveholders, with all the rights of a free white woman, but she is the target of discriminations such as having to ride in the coach car because colored people can’t get tickets in first class.  She has gotten friends in Mrs. Bruce, for whom Linda works as a nurse, and in Reverend Durham, a black minister who helps Linda in Philadelphia.  Linda finds Ellen in the care of relations to Mr. Sands, the Hobbs family, but she is given to Mrs. Hobbs’ eldest daughter, as a servant. Later, Ben arrives in New York to Linda’s care, bringing her much happiness.  Overall, life is happy but for the danger of capture by Dr. Flint and his associates and the discrimination in New York.
