Am Lit. Per. 2
Mrs. LaMagdeleine
Esther goes on her date with Constantin in this chapter, then goes to his house with him. She does this because she wants to be on an equal level with Buddy, i.e. have one affair, like he did, for a reasonable amount of time, like he did. However, this does not come to fruition, because she falls asleep whilst he is in another room. She wakes up with him in bed next to her, and comments through the fourth wall that she's never fallen asleep with a boy before. The strange thing is that Constantin wakes up and loves her, but notices her expression and hides it away. Why else would he take her to a nice, not fancy, but nice, Mediterranean restaurant in the cellar, with all the romantic setup if he did not want this to be a first date? She even lists the things she doesn't like about herself, with an emphasis on things she can't do, and still Constantin can find it in his heart to love her. However, there's going to be some major explaining to do when she tells him about Buddy.
